Affirmations for Fear

Fear is not the problem. Fear is information, and most of the time it is accurate: the thing you are afraid of could go wrong. The problem is what fear does next — it narrows the day down to the one outcome you're bracing for, until there is no room left for the version where it goes fine.

An affirmation for fear doesn't argue that nothing bad will happen. That would be a lie, and you'd know it. It argues something you can actually stand behind: that you have handled hard things before, that this feeling is a wave and not the sea, that you can act while afraid. Courage was never the absence of the feeling.

Use these before the thing, not after. The interview, the message you've been avoiding, the appointment. Say one out loud in the ten minutes when your body is already deciding how the next hour will go, and give it a different instruction.

How to use these

Pick one, not ten

Read the list once, then choose the sentence that stings a little. That is the one about fear you actually need.

Say it, don't scan it

Out loud, in the present tense, a few times. Repetition is the whole mechanism; reading is not.

Put it where you will see it

Save the image and set it as your lock screen or share it as a story. The drawing does half the remembering.

Come back tomorrow

Heart the ones that land so they collect in one place, and open today's when you wake up. A week of this beats an hour of it.

The drawings on this page are Bhavya Doshi's. More on this theme, and licences for them, at The Doodle Desk.
